Living healthy and still enjoying on vacation

Living healthy and still enjoying on vacation, it is possible

This is no doubt recognizable to many. You’re just getting into a healthy flow, those extra pounds are off, you exercise regularly and your eat healthy. The sun is shining, you can wear the clothes you like, you feel healthy and confident. And then you go on vacation. And now? On vacation just munching on a cucumber or carrot while the rest of the party munches away elaborate Greek dishes doesn’t sound very cozy. And so many people wonder: how can I enjoy a well-deserved vacation but also continue to live a healthy life? Good news, it’s doable, really. Keep these tips and you will enjoy the vacation wonderfully, without bringing back a whole bunch of extra pounds in addition to souvenirs.

Tip 1. Just go enjoy

Well, it sounds like a dead giveaway, but let’s start with this. After all, it is the mindset with which you go on vacation. You probably waited a year for it, worked hard for it, it costs you a lot of money, and it only lasts a few weeks. This is your moment to recharge, enjoy with partner, friends, family or just by yourself. You fly, or drive to a country where the sun shines frequently and you get to enjoy that first and foremost. You deserve it, really. We will use the upcoming tips to make sure it all stays responsible and healthy, but the goal of the vacation remains: enjoy! Make sure you hold this mindset.

Tip 2. Good preparation is half the battle

At home, you know the supermarket like the back of your hand, know the one vegan store well, and perhaps always get your eggs from the farmer. But now you are in another country, where you don’t know how to find it all so easily. So prepare well. Find out in advance what the local dishes are, local fruits, vegetables, fish and shellfish that are commonly eaten, where fresh (local) produce may be available and which restaurants serve delicious, healthy, organic, vegetarian or vegan food depending on your lifestyle.

The easiest way to do that is Google Maps. Navigate to where you are staying and type in search words like “salad,” “vegetarian,” “organic” and some nearby restaurants and stores that meet your needs will automatically appear. Furthermore, it is useful to consult sites such as Tripadvisor, where these topics are also frequently discussed. Finally, you may know friends, family or colleagues who have already visited the destination: dare to ask!

Tip 3. Water, water, water

Ok, you’ve arrived at a sunny, warm destination. Wonderful, of course, but your body is going to work to keep your body temperature at an acceptable level. Therefore, you start sweating and in the process you lose more fluids. Drinking too little leads to headaches, intestinal congestion and an overall loss of energy. It’s a shame, because you won’t enjoy the vacation as much that way. It is really necessary to drink at least 2 liters of water in a day, maybe even 2.5 liters. In many countries you don’t drink from the tap, but from a bottle. This is a bit of a hassle when shopping, but after that you can easily keep track of how much you drink. Keep it to water as much as possible and let the soft drinks stand. That will save you money and a lot of
calories
.

Do you really lose a lot of fluids, such as during an athletic hike in the sun? Then make Sole. This is an ancient drink that you can simply make yourself to replenish your lost minerals. Boil water, put ⅓ Celtic sea salt (you’ll need to bring that with you) and ⅔ of the cooled boiled water in a bottle. Mix well and drink on-or store in the refrigerator.

Tip 4. Don't forget your vitamins

Swimsuits, towels, clothes and sunscreen packed? Nice, now for vitamins. Vitamin D you can leave at home, there’s probably plenty of sun on vacation. But take other vitamins that are part of your routine wél with it, such as omega supplements or multivitamins.

Tip 5. Dare to ask

When you sit in a local restaurant, you may feel embarrassed to ask “tough” questions. “Is this dish vegetarian?”, “Do you have organic products on the menu?”. Don’t worry, most restaurants are used to these questions and are eager to satisfy you as a guest. In most cases, it is no problem at all to answer your questions or even prepare something for you off the menu. And if not? Then at least you know that. You’re on vacation and you get to enjoy healthy, so feel free to ask the waiter a really-not-so-bad question.

Finally: little handholds

  • And then finally, there are some little tricks you might apply at home. For example, never go shopping on an empty stomach: it’s bad for your wallet and for your health, because you put all kinds of things (and often too much) in your cart.

  • Skip the fries at a buffet or dish where it comes standard. Just order the dish without fries. You will see that you are full enough, and it saves a huge amount of calories.

  • And feel free to enjoy the occasional beer or wine, but keep it responsible. One glass, or at most two is enough to enjoy. And in the end, that’s what vacation is all about: enjoying!
